Josh Kennedy was named to play his first game of the year after knee and ankle surgeries in the off-season. Liam Duggan returned after being a late withdrawal the previous week, replacing Mark Hutchings, while Liam Ryan was out with a serious ankle injury.

Collingwood recorded a big upset win over Adelaide.

West Coast stormed to a big win over Gold Coast at Perth Stadium, kicking eight goals in the second term to open up a 54-point lead at the main break before running out 80-point winners and moving into second place on the ladder. Kennedy kicked five goals on return and Elliot Yeo had a team-high 33 possessions as Mark LeCras brought up his 200th appearance and Nic Naitanui achieved life membership by playing his 150th game.
GWS Giants defeated Fremantle, Richmond thrashed Brisbane, Sydney won a thriller over Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne thumped Carlton.

Essendon beat Port Adelaide, Hawthorn comfortably defeated Melbourne and Geelong beat St Kilda.

LeCras escaped suspension for a bump that left Ben Ainsworth concussed, with the Match Review Officer ruling that the main contact was to Ainsworth's chest and LeCras' actions were not unreasonable.
Tuesday 17 April[]
There was a flood of bad news on the injury front coming out of the Gold Coast clash with youngster Daniel Venables out for up to 12 weeks after suffering an ankle injury, while veterans Luke Shuey (toe), Brad Sheppard (thigh) and Jack Redden (shin) all facing fitness tests.
Meanwhile, the club announced a contract extension for Willie Rioli, tying the small forward to the club until the end of 2020. Rioli said he wanted to be a one-club player.
