In the first-ever appearance of the West Coast Eagles in a home-and-away game, Paul Peos had the first kick by an Eagle and Laurie Keene had the honour of slotting the club's first goal. Victorian powerhouse club Richmond looked to have the game sewn up at three-quarter time, but an eight goal turnaround in the final quarter sparked by captain Ross Glendinning's move from defence to centre-half-forward saw the new kids on the block take the premiership points.

From the papersEdit

Canberra TimesEdit

"In the third term, it was another WA footballer who dominated but this time it was Maurice Rioli, controlling the centre for Richmond.

The Eagles coach, Ron Alexander, made nine changes at three-quarter-time, including the switch of skipper Glendinning to centre half-forward.

A strong mark and a quick goal to Glendinning lifted the Eagles and five goals in 6min brought the match back to square one.

Richmond did not give in and, although it only managed one goal for the final term, it pushed the Eagles all the way home."
