West Coast tuned up for the finals by recording a big win over the Bombers, extending their lead at every change and holding Essendon goalless in the final term to put the Bombers' own finals hopes in jeopardy. Peter Sumich kicked six goals and late inclusion Paul Peos had a team-high 25 disposals.

From the papers[]

Canberra Times[]

"After breaking the Essendon challenge after half-time, the Eagles re-discovered their outstanding running game with defenders John Worsfold and Guy McKenna giving West Coast pace through the middle of the ground.

Ruck-rover Paul Peos, a late replacement for the injured Chris Mainwaring, and Peter Matera added to the Eagles' efficiency across midfield.

West Coast also had encouraging signs from teenager Glen Jakovich, who, in the second half, outpointed Madden and Salmon at centre-half-back."[1]
