In the 25th Western Derby, West Coast dominated possession but not on the scoreboard, taking until the final quarter to pull away from the Dockers. Midfielder Michael Braun was voted best on ground, but fined for dropping an F-bomb in his Glendinning Medal acceptance speech. In another interesting postscript to the match, Fremantle's Des Headland escaped suspension for a series of wild swings at Adam Selwood by claiming Selwood had made derogatory comments about a tattoo of Headland's daughter, although the Eagle was found not guilty of using insulting language.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Regular defenders Adam Hunter, Darren Glass, Adam Selwood, Beau Waters, Brett Jones and cameo back man Brent Staker all contributed magnificently to the cause.

They did it through physical pressure, courage and co-operation, and through handball. To achieve the necessary run to break the lines, West Coast often used the handball to stage-manage a position where they could release a player such as Jones to hotfoot it towards the centre.

The mainstay defenders had 66 handballs between them, compared with an overall tally of 91 for Fremantle which reflects the Dockers' plan to kick long. There's logic associated with that arrangement, if the kicks find a target.

More often than not, West Coast hit a target going forward.

More often than not, Fremantle didn't.[1]
