St Kilda were ruthless in their demolition of West Coast, taking control of the match early and then completely blowing the Eagles away with a 10-goal second quarter. The Saints extended their lead at every change to run out 97 point winners and move to the top of the table. For the vanquished, Matt Priddis toiled hard as always with 30 disposals and 10 tackles, and emerging forward Mark LeCras kicked 3 goals.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The Saints booted 10 straight goals to just two in a sparkling second term where their uncompromising defensive pressure had West Coast's midfield looking like they were walking uneasily on a wobbly tightrope every time they held the ball.

The first-half spotlight had been cast firmly on South Fremantle premiership player Clinton Jones, who Lyon had trusted with the crucial task of taming West Coast's lion-hearted Daniel Kerr.

Though Kerr snapped angrily at every whip he copped from Jones, the Eagle still fought valiantly - unlike the majority of his teammates - to finish the day with 27 possessions.

A whopping 18 of them were contested, but only eight of his disposals came from his foot as Jones held his impact to a minimum."[1]

The Sunday Age[]

"West Coast somehow was still within 16 points at the first change, but the signs were ominous in St Kilda's complete dominance of the midfield, its ironclad defence, and the ease with which it rebounded into attack. Omens duly delivered in a withering second quarter of 10 goals straight after Eagle Mark Le Cras had booted the first of the quarter.

It was tremendous stuff to watch, the Saints' attack on the ball and man somehow as eye-catching as its forays into the scoring zone. A hardness and intensity personified in the shape of Jones, superb matched up against West Coast champion Daniel Kerr.

Like most of his teammates, Kerr had trouble getting his hands on the ball, and when he did, so fierce was Jones' heat that he never had the time or space to use it properly. Jones won plenty of ball, too, and used it with more precision than he sometimes has in the past. The upshot was 25 disposals, a goal and a phenomenal 14 tackles, the performance of his career to date. But Jones had plenty of mates."[2]
