From the papers[]

The Age[]

"They booted five goals to two in the second quarter, giving them a half-time break of 17 points that was always going to be difficult for the Cats to haul in. Although Geelong threatened, in the early stages of the third and final quarters, it never regained the lead.

In that decisive second quarter, the difference between these sides was the respective midfields. Geelong had no-names such as Daniel Lowther, Carl Steinfort and Sean Simpson, while the Eagles had the experience and class of Peter [sic] Banfield, Dean Kemp and Tony Evans.

The most important contribution, however, came from a highly talented youngster who could easily have been playing for the Cats. That Ben Cousins stayed in Perth rather than play for his father Bryan's team, Geelong, has been a sore point with Geelong since his 1996 debut.

Yesterday, Cousins showed, again, that his destiny may lie in the midfield. In that second quarter, he, Banfield and Evans won decisive possessions. Jason Ball, too, was an effective follower, while Ashley McIntosh smothered his former teammate, Geelong's goal-square behemoth, Jason [sic] Spinks."[1]
