Trent Carroll, whose younger brother Nathan played several seasons for Melbourne, was a serviceable key defender.
Fremantle career[]
Originally from Claremont, Carroll played 33 games for the Dockers in the late 1990s but was delisted after failing to manage a senior game during the 2000 season.
West Coast career[]
West Coast (who apparently hadn’t finished recruiting spare-parts players after trading for Merenda, Taylor, Collica, Prior, Sierakowski and Carroll’s Freo teammate Harding during that offseason) then picked him up with their final pick in the national draft.
With Ashley McIntosh missing a large chunk of the season through injury and Darren Glass still young and green, Carroll was given an extended run in a key defensive post. He played 19 games in the 2001 season, but could manage only 4 the following year as McIntosh returned and Glass continued his development. After spending most of 2002 at Claremont, Carroll was brought back into the side late in the year as a forward and did manage to kick a pair in a round 21 loss to Port Adelaide, the only two-goal haul of his career. Unfortunately, a training mishap cost him his spot in the team for the final home and away game.
Carroll looked to be having an improved season in 2003, managing to hold down a regular spot for the first half of the season as McIntosh neared the end and Glen Jakovich started spending more time up forward. After playing the first 10 games, however, Carroll bounced between seniors and the WAFL for the remainder of the year, playing just 4 more AFL games and again missing the side’s finals campaign.
2004 was much of the same, Carroll playing the first 5 rounds before being sent back to Claremont for a month. Recalled for a three-game stretch mid-season, he was again dropped following a loss to North Melbourne. He could not force his way back into the side and was delisted at the end of the year.
Post-AFL career[]
Carroll played on at the Tigers for one more year before retiring from WAFL football. He was playing coach of South West side Augusta-Margaret River in 2010.
